Gladiators
On special occasions, Gladiators are permitted to leave the ludus. The reason must be clear. They must be on a special mission ordered from the Lanista or have special permission to leave.
If a gladiator sneaks out, they better have a good reason and had better be prepared to rp serious disciplinary actions if caught. Additionally, it would be near impossible for a Gladiator to “sneak” out of any Ludus, they are heavily guarded and even if avatars do not stand at the gates and doors and at various places in the Ludus or attached Villa, you are to assume NPC guards. Each Ludus will at all times have at least 6 NPC guards present. You must remember, Ludi were heavily protected as they contained very dangerous men who were not necessarily loyal to Rome.
**With this said!! even on special mission, Gladiators must be in disguise (cloak with hood or mask) or have guards with them. They are trained killers and it would not be ok for them to walk about Rome as if free men. You are slaves, or indentured to your ludus, even if you joined it as a free man, you will be treated how the Lanista sees fit and must adhere to these basic rules for gladiators, or don’t be one.
If leaving the ludus, and no characters are available to accompany you (i.e. Lanista, guards, etc), then RP at least one, preferably two NPC guards with you. If you forget to include this at the BEGINNING of any RP you become engaged in, then they are NOT with you and you CANNOT add them in later. In this case, you will be expected to RP out any and all consequences appropriately!
Praetorians
If you are stopped and questioned by a Praetorian (the law here), treat it as you would if you were stopped RL – worse, if you were stopped by the Gestapo. You do NOT want to mess with these guys they, under the leadership of the Praetor, took down 4 or 5 Emperors in RL history. They can confiscate everything you own, have you locked away forever under trumped up charges and do any multitude of despicable things to you including killing you to set an example – and they will likely get away with it (the Praetor especially).
Adhere to their requests and go with them if they wish to detain you. In character, law enforcement is not huggy/cuddly and does not wish to guard your feelings. If you are to be questioned, go, or deal with realistic consequences of refusing arrest. We can not stress this enough.
Wealthy vs. Poor Classes
We strive to role-play as the ancient Romans would have. There was a DEFINITE class system. A pleb would have to treat people who outranked them with respect, even if in their hearts they felt hatred. Defiance toward the upper class, would meet with discipline from Praetorian/Legionaries if caught.
Dress is to be properly maintained. Noble women who wander around town dressed as slaves or Lupinaria whores (i.e. showing all sorts of skin, under cleavage, bellies, thighs to include hips, etc), will find themselves having some serious problems or being mistaken for slaves. The consequences will be adhered to in RP!
Criminals / Mob
They are here, they will shake down merchants for “protection money” or they will do all necessary to ensure you see it their way. If you are approached by criminals, please ensure that you are prepared to RPrealistically.
Slaves
New slaves in Rome are expected to go to the slaver. It is the building near the fountain, facing the tavern with the cages outside of it. Slaves are to act as slaves would at all times. A slave has only the money given by their Domina/Dominus, they dress as a slave would, and they do not speak to people of high rank without a reason to do so — for example, their Dominus has sent them to ask.
Additionally, slaves did not pull up a chair in a tavern, especially not to join other patrons and most especially not with the elite nobles! You are to abide by the rules set by the slavers and then later your owner if you are to be purchased.
There are many other roles in Gods of Valor, but this sheds light on only the ones that require high interaction. If you would like a specific role in the sim, please contact an Admin and submit an application through the amphora at in the landing zone.
